What to check, in order
- Open both taps fully
Hot and cold, with both hoses connected: red to hot, blue to cold.
- Straighten the hoses
No kinks behind the machine. Anti-flood hoses and devices can cut the pressure and the flow.
- Clean the inlet screens
Turn the taps off and unscrew the hoses from the washer. On top-loaders, Whirlpool says to clean the screens with a brush, mild soap and water without taking them out. On front-loaders, clean or replace them.
- Test the hoses at a sink
Run water through them. If the flow is weak, replace the hoses.
- Check the drain hose
No more than 4.5 in (113 mm) into the drainpipe, not taped in (leave an air gap), and the top of the drain at least 39 in (99 cm) above the floor. Otherwise water drains away as it fills.
When to call an engineer
If it continues with good flow, schedule service.
Good to know
- The door or lid may stay locked and the controls may not respond. Pressing Power starts a drain that runs for about 8 to 10 minutes; on top-loaders Whirlpool says to wait 10 minutes before doing anything else.
