- Check how far the hose goes in
Don't push the drain hose into the standpipe past its elbow, and no more than 4.5 in (113 mm). Deeper, and water siphons back into the tub.
- Don't reshape or tape the hose
Keep its factory shape and leave an air gap at the standpipe.
- Look for kinks and clogs
Along the hose, and in the standpipe or sink it drains into.
- Front-loaders: clean the drain pump filter
On models that have one. Unplug the washer, lay a towel down and drain the water through the small drain hose into a flat container before you take the filter out. Clean the small drain holes in the door seal too.
- Check the heights
Whirlpool's front-load guidance: the standpipe at least 39 in (99 cm) and no more than 96 in (244 cm) high.

If it continues, schedule service. The pump may have failed.
