Whirlpool & Maytag error codes
Whirlpool and Maytag washers sold in North America show codes in an F#E# format, such as F8E1 or F5E2, sometimes with a space (F8 E1). Top-load and front-load machines share the codes, with small differences noted on each page. A Whirlpool machine in the UK or Europe uses a different system: see Hotpoint & Indesit.

Washing machines 11 codes
F8E1 Not enough water coming in
The washer isn't detecting the right amount of incoming water.
F9E1 Draining takes too long
The washer couldn't drain in the time allowed.
F5E1 Door or lid switch fault
The washer can't read the switch that tells it the door or lid is closed.
F5E2 Door or lid won't lock
The washer can't lock the lid (top-loaders), or the door isn't locking properly (front-loaders).
F5E3 Door or lid won't unlock
The lock won't release when it should.
F0E2 Too many suds
The washer found too many suds, so the load may not be fully rinsed or spun.
F0E5 Load unbalanced or too large
The load is off balance, or too big to spin properly.
F3E1 Water level sensor
The washer can't detect the water level: the pressure sensor's signal is missing or out of range.
F7E1 Motor speed can't be read
The washer can't sense the motor or basket speed.
F1E1 Main control fault
The washer's main control board has reported a fault.
F6E2 Controls can't communicate
The control board and the user interface (the buttons and display) have stopped talking to each other.

Good to know
- For most of these codes, Whirlpool's own first step is the same: unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then try again. Maytag's help pages use the same wording as Whirlpool's.
