GE VENT error code

What it means

The vent carries hot, moist air and stray lint out of the dryer. When it's blocked, the heat and humidity stay in the drum: the dryer gets hot to the touch, sweats and takes longer to dry. GE also calls it a potential safety issue, because lint builds up in the vent.

What to check, in order

1. Clean the lint filter

   A full lint filter can set it off.

2. Clean the duct

   Unplug the dryer, disconnect the duct from it, and vacuum the duct with an appliance brush or a vacuum hose attachment.

3. Check the outside wall cap

   The flaps (the damper) should move freely. Make sure there's no bird or other animal nest in the duct or the hood.

4. Check the duct run

   It should be rigid metal, or UL-listed flexible metal, 4 in (10 cm) across, and no longer than your Installation Instructions allow. GE says never to use plastic ducting.

5. Dry a load to check

   Run a load on an automatic cycle and check that the light goes off. On front-loaders the alert clears once the dryer senses the blockage has gone.

Good to know

• Front-load dryers only show VENT BLOCKED after sensing a blockage 4 times, to avoid false alarms.
• Some models have a Vent Health test. With the drum empty and the lint filter clean, hold Time and Level for 3 seconds, close the door and press Start. 01 means clean, 02 may need attention and 03 means blocked.
• GE says to clean the vent at least once a year, even if the alert never comes on.
