What to check, in order
- Reset the power first
Unplug the fridge, or switch it off at its circuit breaker, and use it again after about 5 minutes. If the code comes back, LG says ice may be stopping the fan.
- Get ready to defrost
Move your food to another fridge or an insulated cool box, and put dry towels on the floor round the fridge to catch any water.
- Unplug it and open the doors
Leave the freezer and fridge doors fully open for at least 24 hours. LG says it takes about a day in summer and up to three days in winter.
- Don't use a hair dryer
LG warns the heat can warp plastic parts inside the fridge or create a fire hazard.
- Dry it and restart
Wipe away any water left inside with a dry towel, then plug it back in and close the doors. Allow 24 to 48 hours for it to get back to normal temperatures.
- Stop it coming back
Don't overfill the freezer, and make sure the door closes fully every time.
When to call an engineer
If the code comes back after a full defrost, the fan motor itself may have failed. LG says to request a technician visit.
Good to know
- LG UK says to leave the doors open for at least eight hours; LG US says at least 24 hours, and up to three days in winter.
- Some top-freezer models show just F. Er rF (or E rF) is the same kind of fault for the fan in the fridge section: LG's advice there is the 5 minute power reset, then a technician if it comes back.
