What it means
Samsung US gives each code a meaning. 83E is abnormal current to the compressor. 85E is too little voltage, as in a brownout, and 86E too much, as in a surge during a thunderstorm. 88 88 is a communication fault that can happen if the power is disrupted while the fridge is starting up. On Family Hub models, 85C means low voltage was detected.
What to check, in order
- Switch it off for a minute
Unplug the fridge or turn it off at the circuit breaker for 60 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Family Hub showing 85C?
Samsung US says you can clear it by pressing OK for 3 seconds.
- Check the fuse box
Samsung UK says to check your fuse box is working properly, especially after a power cut, a tripped switch or a drop in voltage.
- Check the socket
Test the socket with another device, such as a lamp or a charger. If the fridge is on a surge protector or an extension lead, check that too.
- Let it run its self-check
When the power comes back, the fridge runs a self-diagnostic check. Samsung US says all the icons flashing at this point is normal.
When to call an engineer
If the code comes back after a power reset. Samsung US says to request service.

- Samsung India's reset is 30 seconds unplugged; Samsung US says 60 seconds.
- Samsung India says that while 88 88 is showing, the fridge won't respond to commands.
