Hotpoint F9 E1 error code

Not draining

The machine couldn't pump the water out of the drum. Hotpoint's guides for its newer ActiveCare machines point to a dirty pump filter, a bent drain hose or a clogged drain.

The same code appears on Whirlpool W8 machines sold in Europe.

What to check

Checked against 4 official sourcesReviewed October 2026

Worth repairing?

Usually free

Usually a blocked pump filter or hose, which costs nothing to clear.

Can you do it yourself?

Easy

About 20 minutes

Before you start

  • Unplug it before you touch anything inside.
  • Turn the tap off before you undo any hose or filter.
  • If it stopped mid-wash, let hot water cool before you drain it.

What it means

Newer Hotpoint washing machines, such as the H8 and NM11 ActiveCare ranges, show two-part codes like F9 E1. The manuals print it as F9E1, and the display can also show a filter warning symbol. Most other Hotpoint and Indesit machines, including the current NSWM range, use the classic codes, where a drain problem is F05.

What to check, in order

  1. Switch off and unplug it

If the wash was hot, let the water cool first.

  2. Open the panel at the bottom front

Put a container and towels underneath, and let the remaining water run out.

  3. Clean the pump filter

Unscrew it, rinse it under running water, then screw it fully back in.

  4. Check the drain hose

Make sure it isn't bent or kinked behind the machine.

  5. Check the drain itself

If the machine drains into a sink waste or a standpipe, make sure that isn't clogged.

When to call an engineer

If F9 E1 comes back after the filter, hose and drain checks, contact Hotpoint on 0344 822 4224 or book an engineer to check the drain pump.
