What it means

Samsung's Smart Install guide describes C554 as 'Lack of Refrigerant' on inverter models, and its service manuals call E554 a 'Gas leakage error'. The same manual groups it with E422 (pipe blockage or valve closed). On Samsung EHS heat pumps, the control kit manual also lists E554 as 'Gas leak error'.

What to check, in order

  1. Reset the power once

Samsung's service page suggests a reset first, because electrical noise can upset the controls. Switch off at the breaker, wait about a minute, then switch back on.

  2. Call an engineer if it returns

If the code comes back, Samsung says a professional engineer needs to inspect the unit. Don't keep running it on repeated resets.

When to call an engineer

Call an F-gas certified engineer (UK) or a licensed HVAC technician (US). Samsung's Smart Install guide has the installer check for leaks at the valve and pipe joints and, where the pipe run is longer than 7.5 m, that enough extra refrigerant was added.

A repair visit will usually check the refrigerant charge and the pipe joints for leaks, which needs a qualified refrigeration engineer.

Before you book
  • Note the model and serial number. They're on a label on the side of the indoor unit, and on the outdoor unit.
  • Write down the exact code, and what the appliance was doing when it appeared.
  • Check whether it's still under warranty. If it is, the repair may cost you nothing.
