What to check

Checked against 4 official sourcesReviewed October 2026

Worth repairing?

Usually free

Usually blocked airflow or a dirty filter, which you can sort yourself. If it keeps happening with good airflow, have it checked.

Can you do it yourself?

Easy

About 30 minutes

Before you start

  • Unplug it before you touch anything inside.
  • Watch for broken glass in the filter or pump.

What it means

LG Canada's chart says 'Outdoor unit condenser coil temperature is too high'. LG's US page says some models show it as P4, P6 or P8, and LG Africa adds P7. LG says the code does not clear by itself, so you need to reset the power after fixing the cause.

What to check, in order

  1. Clear space around the outdoor unit

Move anything stacked near the front, sides or back so hot air can escape instead of being drawn back in. If the unit is in an enclosed space, open its vents or windows fully.

  2. Give it shade, not a box

LG suggests a sun shade in strong sun, fixed securely, but without covering the back or sides of the unit.

  3. Brush the outdoor coil

Switch the power off first. Wearing gloves, LG says to brush dust off the coil at the back of the outdoor unit from top to bottom with a thick-bristled brush, taking care not to bend the fins. You can also rinse it with water sprayed from the top so it runs downward.

  4. In heating mode, clean the indoor filter

LG gives a clogged indoor filter as the cause when CH61 appears while heating.

  5. Reset the power

Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker, wait 3 minutes and switch it back on.

When to call an engineer

If CH61 returns after you have cleared the airflow and reset it, LG recommends a professional inspection.

Good to know

  • LG's US page says cooling may drop when the outdoor temperature is below 18°C (64°F) or above 48°C (118°F).
