What to check, in order
- Check your other gas appliances
If your gas hob or oven won't light either, the problem may be the gas supply rather than the boiler.
- Check the condensate pipe
In freezing weather, look at the plastic pipe that runs from the boiler to the outside. Bubbling or gurgling from the boiler is another sign it's frozen.
- Thaw it gently
Pour warm, not boiling, water along the pipe, or hold a hot water bottle against it. Boiling water can crack the pipe.
- Reset the boiler
Once the pipe has thawed, reset it the way your boiler's manual describes.
When to call a Gas Safe engineer
If F29 comes back, call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Vaillant's list of causes includes an interrupted gas supply, a blocked flue or air intake, a faulty ignition electrode or burner, and water in the combustion chamber from a blocked condensate drain.
