WORCESTER BOSCHBOILER

Worcester Bosch EA 229 fault code

Flame lost while running

The burner lit, but the flame went out while the boiler was running, so it has locked out. Worcester names a blocked condensate trap and strong wind blowing into the flue among the causes.

Also shown as 229

What to check

Checked against 3 official sourcesReviewed October 2026

Worth repairing?

Usually free

Often the gas supply or a frozen condensate pipe, which cost nothing to sort. If it keeps happening, an engineer needs to look.

Can you do it yourself?

Easy

About 20 minutes

Before you start

  • Never take the boiler's cover off. Anything inside is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Smell gas? Turn it off at the meter and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

What it means

On Greenstar i ErP and Si, CDi and i System Compact ErP boilers you see EA with 229 under it. The Greenstar 8000 Life and 8000+ show 229 on its own.

What to check, in order

  1. Check you have gas

Do your gas cooker or hob work? If you have a prepayment meter, check the credit. If there's no gas, contact your gas supplier.

  2. Check the condensate pipe and the flue outlet

If it's safe to reach, look for ice or a blockage in the condensate pipe outside, and anything blocking the flue outlet.

  3. Thaw a frozen pipe gently

Only at ground level: use warm water, never boiling, as Worcester's user instructions describe.

  4. Reset the boiler once

    Press the reset button briefly.

When to call a Gas Safe engineer

If EA 229 comes back, call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Worcester's manuals list the gas-air ratio, the gas pressure, the flame sensor or its wiring and blocked condensate pipes. On LPG, an empty or just-refilled tank can cause it too.

Parts people end up buying

Only if the checks above point to a part. Match it to your model number first: it's on a label on the data badge, usually under the boiler or behind the front cover.
