What it means
Mitsubishi's code tables call it 'outdoor unit fan protection stop'. The PUZ-HA manual flags it when the fan runs at 100 rpm or less for 15 seconds while it is 20°C (68°F) or warmer outside. With a wireless remote, the self-check reports it as 8 beeps and 8 flashes in the outdoor-fault pattern.
What to check, in order
- Switch off at the isolator
Turn the system off at the controller and at the isolator next to the outdoor unit.
- Look, don't touch
From outside the grille, check that nothing such as leaves, ice or a cover is jammed against the fan. Don't put hands or tools through the grille.
- Switch on once
Turn the power back on and restart. If U8 returns, leave it off and book a repair.
When to call an engineer
Call an air conditioning engineer (UK) or HVAC technician (US). Mitsubishi points to the outdoor DC fan motor or the outdoor control board, and tells engineers to check the motor and the board's output.
A repair visit will usually check the fan motor, its wiring and anything blocking the blades.
- Note the model and serial number. They're on a label on the side of the indoor unit, and on the outdoor unit.
- Write down the exact code, and what the appliance was doing when it appeared.
- Check whether it's still under warranty. If it is, the repair may cost you nothing.
