Instant Pot C5 error code

Too hot: no inner pot or no liquid

The base got too hot, either because the inner pot isn't in the cooker or because there's no liquid in it.

Worth repairing?

Usually free

It's almost always the pot or the liquid, not a fault.

Can you do it yourself?

Very easy

About 10 minutes

Before you start

  • Let it cool completely first.
  • Unplug it before you touch anything inside.

What to check, in order

  1. Press Cancel and let it cool

Wait for the heating element to cool before you go near the base.

  2. Check the cooker base

Make sure nothing has fallen into it. Put the inner pot in, or reseat it, and set the programme again.

  3. Check for scorching

If the pot was in place, look at its bottom for burnt-on food and clean it off.

  4. Add thin liquid

    At least 1 cup (250 mL) for a 3-quart pot, 1½ cups (375 mL) for a 6-quart, 2 cups (500 mL) for an 8-quart and 2½ cups (625 mL) for a 10-quart.
