Look-alikes to watch for
Seven bars can only draw so much. These are the pairs that cause most wrong look-ups.
- 5 or S?Same shape. Samsung's 5E and the S in Sud are drawn exactly alike, so either reading is a fair guess.
- 0 or O?Same shape. LG's OE is the letter O, but most people read it as a zero. The search accepts both.
- 1 or I?Almost the same: one stroke on the left or the right. LG's IE is often read as 1E.
- 9 or g?Same shape. The g in Samsung's CLg or LG's gAS is drawn like a 9.
- E or F?One bar apart. If the bottom bar has died, an E shows as an F.
- 6 or b?One bar apart: b has no top bar.
- 8 or b?A display can't draw a capital B, so it uses 8 or a lowercase b.
- 2 or Z?Same shape. Z is rare on appliances; it's almost always a 2.
- U or V?A display can't draw a V, so it uses U.
- 1 or i?Frigidaire's i20 is easy to read as 120. Try both.
Tips for reading a display
- Codes that alternate or scroll, like F8 then E1, are one code: F8E1.
- A flashing code is still a code. Take a video with your phone and pause it.
- Some displays show the code upside down to you if you read them from above. Read it from in front of the machine.
- Codes on models without a display blink a light instead. Count the blinks, then check your manual.
